From Founder's Desk
As an Indian who migrated to UK myself I have been lost when I returned to India. June 6th, 2019, I found out my mom’s cancer’s recurrence after 18 years. It was in her lungs now. 7th June 2019 I was here had to leave my new job, university course and my life as I knew it in an instance.
My mom was a single mom and she deserved to be with family when she was fighting one of the toughest battles of her life. Following mom’s stage 4 cancer diagnosis and my sudden flight back to ‘my country’ my struggles were just staring. The prejudices I faced being a returning Indian ( mainly around our financial status ) ; made my life a living hell. Thus I have a special affinity to plight of migrant Indians who had to leave or have left India in dreams of academic, financial and professional reasons; and now have had to return to their motherland.
The ‘Returning Indians’ as I call us have to come back due to varied reasons and most prominent two ones are Covid pandemic related job losses and elderly parent’s plight as they enter their golden years. Apart from that if we put our ‘prejudiced hats’ aside and wear our ‘cloaks of compassion’ we know there are many reasons why we need support whether we return or are still carrying this label of Non Returning Indians . Reasons like Brexit , racism , marital abuse both for men and women who marry abroad and many others.
Another major part of this vision is to let the happily settled NRI’s to support India.
All I have heard in the last 2 years since Covid 19 and even before was we want to help but don’t know what is honestly going to reach people who need our help. NRI Support India will facilitate to the best of our knowledge NGO’s and projects that can be supported by NRI’s.
My Vision is to integrate. One weave for us Indians wherever we are
We are here for each other. I am trying hard to channelize my thoughts, traumas and experiences to weave this support structure in the form of NRI Support India Covid Relief for now. It’s a set of volunteers and information that helps and supports both non residents and residents.
